The Pattern at Pendarvis — a fictionalized account, based on interviews by Will Fellows, of a man in his nineties who did pioneering work in historical preservation in a small, mid-western town — deals with contemporary gay identity issues in conversation with a man who spent his life in the closet.

"Simply Perfect"

The headline says it all: "The Pattern at Pendarvis is Simply Perfect!" Read the whole review here.

"Serene, absorbing and concise drama" with "majestic," "wistfully halting, fiery and impish" Lawrence Merritt says Darryl Reilly at theatrescene.net

And "Under the direction of Joseph Megel, the cast had us believing that what we were seeing really did happen as recently as twenty years ago" from Opplaud. Read the whole review here.

Some of the other words that are being thrown around include: "Absorbing, exquisite, great writing, great acting, intelligent, relevant, resonant." Check out more of the people's reviews here.

New Dog Theatre Company

Adapted and fictionalized from interviews conducted in 1997 by Will Fellows as part of the research for his book A Passion to Preserve: Gay Men as Keepers of Culture.

“There is a deep satisfaction in the opportunity to present this particular story, right now,” says StreetSigns artistic director Joseph Megel: “…a nuanced piece of work for the stage that offers an intimate look at often overlooked movements in cultural history in ‘flyover country’ … a quieter world where the issues are not battled out by outrage junkies screaming for and against political correctness and identity politics.”

Features Lawrence Merritt as the nonagenarian Edgar, with David Murray Jaffe, and Gregory Jensen. Directed by Joseph Megel; sets by Daniel Ettinger; lighting and video design by Joseph Amodei; costumes by Gail Cooper-Hecht; production stage manager, Ruth Gersh.

Presented at HERE Arts Center as part of SubletSeries@HERE, a curated rental program providing artists with subsidized space and equipment, as well as technical support.
